how to choose the right UV coating

When it comes to UV curing coatings, it is important to make distinctions because various types exist that have different characteristics and performance.
So how do you choose the UV coating that best suits your needs?

UV curing coatings are becoming increasingly popular in the industrial coatings market, since they successfully meet many recent market demands, such as eco-friendliness and high productivity, at affordable prices in order to remain competitive.

UV coatings, now well-established in the wood coating and ink printing markets, have become viable alternatives also in the industrial market of metals and plastics.

The types of UV coatings currently available are:

  • 100% dry residue UV coatings
  • Solvent-based UV coatings
  • Water-based UV coatings
  • UV cross-linkable coatings with LED UV lamps

All the above UV coatings can be formulated in a „dual cure” version, i.e. hybridized with a thermal cross-linking resin, so as to facilitate UV curing coating even for three-dimensional details that are not easily heated by the rays of a UV lamp.

Once the advantages of UV coatings over traditional heat-dried coatings are understood, however, the question arises as to which type of UV coating to choose.

The table below is intended to help you consciously assess the strengths and weaknesses of the different types of UV coatings.

As can be seen from a brief analysis of the characteristics given, there is absolutely no type of UV coating that is better than others. Since they all have advantages and disadvantages, it is better to opt for the most suitable solution depending on the requirements of the product segment concerned.

Without going into a detailed analysis of what is shown in the table, it is however useful and interesting to note how, on the whole, the UV coatings with the most critical issues (i.e. red indicators) are water-based and solvent-based UV coatings.

Naturally, everyone, due to their own business requirements and the market, can more or less choose the type of UV coatings to be used, although sometimes some choices are, unfortunately, quite compulsory.

In the field of packaging, for example, where different plastic materials are treated and where high-quality finishes and high productivity are required, the only UV coatings currently used are solvent-based.

Arsonsisi paintexpo2020 new date

Due to latest developments of the COVID-19 sanitary emergency, PaintExpo, the world’s leading trade fair for industrial coating technology, will now take place from 12 to 15 October 2020 at the Karlsruhe Trade Fair Center.

The organizer FairFair GmbH stated that the original contracts with approximately 540 participating companies from 26 countries are still valid without restriction for the new date, as are visitor tickets.

PaintExpo 2020

PaintExpo 2020, the Leading International Trade Fair for Industrial Coating Technology, will take place in Karlsruhe (Germany) from 21 through 24 April 2020.

Karlsruhe Exhibition Centre will be transformed into an international marketplace for innovations, applications, future technologies and trends covering all aspects of industrial coating technologies.

In 2018 PaintExpo welcomed 11,790 visitors coming from 88 countries and 537 exhibitors from 29 countries.

This year, a complete range of solutions targeted at optimising coating processes and making them fit for the future will await trade fair visitors.

UV LED curing coatings

The industrial coating market is constantly searching for innovative solutions to meet the needs of high productivity and a reduction in process and management costs, with a special focus on environmental sustainability.

For this purpose, at its R&D laboratories in Berlingo, Arsonsisi has recently developed a new line of coatings for UV LED (Light Emitting Diodes) lamp curing.

Coatings for UV LED lamps are 100% dry residue, i.e. they do not contain volatile organic compounds, water or solvents, whereas crosslinking using UV LED lamp curing technology allows significant energy savings to be achieved.

A UV LED lamp can also be combined, on the coating line, with a traditional Hg UV lamp – with mercury vapours – using “dual cure” hybrid UV coatings.

Each UV LED lamp emits UV rays in the UV-A/UV-V area, using the emission of single LED diodes mounted in arrays.

UV LED lamps are monochromatic lamps (365nm, 385nm, 395nm and 405nm) with very low consumption, unlike traditional lamps, which emit a spectrum with different wavelengths.

UV LED technology offers many advantages over the use of traditional Hg UV lamps. For example, UV LED lamps:

– do not emit ozone

– are free from mercury and hazardous substances

– do not emit UV-B and UV-C rays

– have low heat emission

– are equipped with instant on/off switching

– have adjustable power from 0-100%

– have a partial irradiance width

– have very small dimensions that allow them to be easily inserted in production machinery

– guarantee the option of placing several lamps side by side, obtaining continuous irradiation

– crosslink coatings instantly

– last about 10 times longer.

UV LED lamps are used with excellent results for crosslinking inks, coatings and adhesives.

The new UV LED lamp coatings by Arsonsisi are ideal for coating metal and plastic materials. They are widely used mainly in cosmetic packaging, and in components produced in large batches, such as bottle caps.

Arsonsisi e Bialetti

For 15 years, Arsonsisi’s powder coatings have been adding a touch of colour to some of the most successful lines of Bialetti coffeemakers.

When talking about Moka coffeemakers, you inevitably think of the aroma, colour and taste of a good coffee made in a Bialetti coffeemaker, whether it is the traditional Moka Express or one of the many others produced over the years.

In 1933, Alfonso Bialetti invented the Moka, the aluminium coffeemaker that revolutionised the way coffee is made. Up to now, more than 300 million Moka coffeemakers have been sold, almost unchanged in their octagonal shape.

But the Moka Express is not the only product created by the Bialetti brand. Every year, millions of „L’omino coi baffi” (the little man with a moustache) coffeemakers are sold in various versions and colours.

The partnership between Arsonsisi and Bialetti began in 2004, with the launching of the Mukka Express, the cream and black stovetop coffeemaker resembling the spotted hide of a cow, the only one that allows you to make a creamy espresso cappuccino.

Later, Arsonsisi developed epoxy-polyesters and polyesters for various coffeemaker lines, including the most well-known: matt colours for the Fiammetta (2011-2013), green for the Break Alpina (2012-2019); pink for the Moka Express in the special edition for the Giro d’Italia cycling race (2012-2013); various colours for the Dama “Glamour” version (2012-2016) and golden yellow for the Christmas collection (2016-2018), of which more than 30,000 coffeemakers were sold.

After the success of the latter range, the latest project by Bialetti is the new Christmas collection in a Rose Gold colour, which sees the Mokina, the Moka Express (1, 3 and 6 cups) and the Fiammetta acquire a transparent rose gold colour, an epoxy-polyester coating developed by Arsonsisi.

By researching and examining aesthetic and stylistic trends, our Style department has proposed a new collection featuring the Shining Rose Gold colour. This warm, delicate and precious colour makes our coffeemaker the real queen of coffee».

«It was not easy, since it took several samples before we found the right balance between the colour and the transparent effect on the coffeemaker after applying the coating. We achieved the desired result thanks to the Arsonsisi laboratory».

Once the colour has been chosen, Bialetti carries out two different adhesion tests, in its laboratory, on the paint samples: the physical resistance of the coating and stain resistance. These tests are very aggressive yet crucial for selecting the coating.

We are highly satisfied that our coating has been chosen for the top colour of the next Christmas collection and we are particularly happy to continue collaborating with Bialetti Industrie, since we have rediscovered that passion for Italian excellence, research into innovation and constant attention to quality also shared by Arsonsisi.

Ipcm®: Tell us about the importance of research and development in Arsonsisi

Dr. S. Lazzerini: The research and development department is the core of Arsonsisi whole activity, because only by keeping up with the changing needs of the market it is possible to remain competitive.

Within the Berlingo production plant, Arsonsisi has created a Competence Centre for the development of UV technologies, cooperating with installers, raw material suppliers, and analysis laboratories to manage specific, tailor-made projects in synergy with customers and different research institutes.

In addition to the laboratory for the development of UV coatings, this plant houses a testing laboratory for raw materials and finished products and a research laboratory for non-UV thermal products.

Ipcm®: How is the Competence Centre for the UV coatings equipped?

Dr. S. Lazzerini: The laboratory for the development of UV coatings is equipped with a dry spray paint booth, a COWLES bench disperser for the preparation of pigmented products up to 40 kg, standard laboratory instrumentation, and a UV tunnel.

The UV curing device supplied by UV Ray (Cornaredo, Milan) is the latest innovation of the laboratory.

We introduced this new device to streamline the activity of our lab. That is why we explicitly required UV Ray to equip the oven with a plastic case to prevent our operators from using UV protections, which would otherwise be mandatory because the rays can harm eyesight: this facilitates work.

Moreover, previously there was only one UV tunnel used by both the testing and UV coating labs, with easily understandable overlapping issues.

Thanks to the UV Ray oven, we have now separated our two activities and solved the problem.

Ipcm®: What are the advantages of the UV tunnel?

Dr. S. Lazzerini: We needed to find a tool enabling our operators to set variable parameters without limiting to any specific type of workpiece or process.

The UV Ray tunnel has perfectly met these needs, because it is a very versatile and efficient system.

First of all, it allows adjusting the advancement speed of the parts positioned on the conveyor belt.

Secondly, it enables to vary the height of the UV lamp, thus increasing or decreasing its distance from the sample and making it possible to cure even three-dimensional objects with complex shapes.

Finally, it allows adjusting the mercury lamp power from a few W/cm2 to a specific maximum power of 180 W/cm2.

A further benefit is the energy saving guaranteed by the UV Ray system. Turning on and off a UV lamp reduces the tool’s service life by 3 hours, thus resulting in rapid wear. The UV Ray tunnel has been designed in order to enter stand-by mode to allow the lamp to save energy.

The flexibility of this device is fundamental for us, as the UV sector is expanding and every day we are faced with very different requests in terms of type and size of parts. An instrument with such flexible characteristics enables us to meet even the most particular needs.

Ipcm®: What are the current projects for the UV coatings laboratory?

Dr. S. Lazzerini: We are focused on pre- and post-UV coatings for sputtering processes on plastics and metals, 100% dry UV coatings, water-based UV coatings, LED lamp hardening coatings, and UV coatings for the automotive sector.

As for the development of UV coatings that harden with LED lamps, our UV Ray system is ready for the possible addition of LED lamps or the replacement of the mercury-based one currently in use.

We intend to devote ourselves to the development of this type of paint in the future, but we looked for a tool that allows replacing the lamps without forcing us to purchase a specific instrument with LED lamps.

Ipcm®: How do you reckon the state of the art of the PVD/Sputtering coatings?

Dr. S. Lazzerini: If lawmakers do not establish a deadline for the ban on chromium VI, the market, especially in the automotive industry, will continue to use traditional systems.

The galvanic process will continue to be counterposed to the physical vapour deposition (PVD) technology, which is the most ecological alternative on the market and, in addition to giving the same results, allows treating different materials.

In this framework, Arsonsisi has developed three systems for PVD sputtering coatings:

  • A base system with a UV paint + a sputtering layer + a post-sputtering UV paint, possibly a dual cure product, in order to harden the coating even where UV beams do not directly hit the surface;
  • A mixed system composed of a UV base-coat + a sputtering layer + a post-sputtering thermal coating, generally aliphatic polyurethane enamel;
  • A system composed of a pre-sputtering UV paint + a sputtering finishing layer; the longer dwell time of the workpiece in the sputtering chamber ensures higher thicknesses, so that repainting is no longer necessary.

Ipcm®: What do you think about the future of the UV market?

Dr. S. Lazzerini: Our R&D department has already completed and presented to the market numerous projects. Other studies have been completed, but they are not easily accepted by the sector, such as those relating to powder coatings for MDF.

The main difficulties, especially for coating contractors, concern the high investment required to install a UV curing system also optimised for cross-linking coatings on complex three-dimensional parts and for handling large batches.

However, the very big orders are now handled in China, whereas European coaters tend to characterise their production by applying special coatings on small batches. Therefore, making such a large investment can be an issue for them.

On the other hand, the systems that include PVD sputtering coatings are now fine-tuned and they work very well, so much so that they are now starting to be requested by our most far-sighted customers (even those using conventional galvanic processes) that want to avoid being in trouble when lawmakers will definitively ban the use of CrVI.

Of course, our research activity cannot stop at the results obtained. Having found reliable partners for the supply of the right equipment is a further guarantee that our projects can be developed flexibly and quickly and with the proper safety measures for our operators.

The wood industry benefits the most from low-temperature powder coatings technology.

This is the reason that led Arsonsisi to focus its work on the development of formulations that meet the needs of MDF market, a technical support widely used in the wood industry.

MDF performances change depending on the variation of the following material features: paintability, depth of furrows, sanding, resistance to craters in the edges, conductivity, degassing (water and additives).

Through careful selection of the resins, additives and wood fibers used, it’s possible to produce best MDF for the application of powder coatings.

There are several advantages related to the use of powder coatings on MDF, both in substitution of laminate. In the first case it’s about freedom of design (curved shapes and edges without joints), flexibility in terms of colors and surface aspect, homogenous texturized surface both visual and tactile, ease of application and manageability, reduction of process costs.

The advantages with liquid are elimination of VOC emissions, elimination or reduction of intermediate sanding, use of 97% of powered coatings used, easy recycling and absence of waste treatment, full application on the edges in a single phase.

Powder Coatings Application and UV Curing

The traditional way of powder coatings application is based on electrostatic techniques and requires conductive substrates to work.

Since MDF is a non-conductive material, there are methods to make it so such as the introduction of conductive agents in its formulation or the application of a conductive liquid primer before proceeding with powder coating the support. Once dried it is possible to apply powder coating.

The most effective method is the pre-meating by IR lamps on both panel’s sides, whose temperature once out from infrared oven must be about 90°C.

The coating of the substrate must take place within 1 or 2 minutes from the preheating process using a tribo or crown spray gun.

The best results are obtained using a combination of infrared and convective heat. On the other hand, it is possible to use infrared heating only.

It is essential to use a MDF of adequate quality: some supports are so conductive that the powder coatings can be applied without preheating. However, since the quality of MDF may vary from batch to batch, it’s advisable to preheat to obtain an homogenous film thickness on the whole item.

Light preheating with IR allows additives migration from the MDF substrate to the surface, making the panel more conductive and easy to coat.

The Selac® XFC – Extra Fast Curing Powder Coatings and Selac® UV powder coatings range is the result of a fifteen-year work of Arsonsisi R&D laboratories: powder coatings thermosetting for thermal crosslinking (XFC) o UV.

Selac® XFC powder coatings are particularly suitable for low quality requirements such as those of shelves, TV/PC stands, desks and standard furniture for general use, considering the lower costs/m2 compared to UV products.

They need a single melting and polymerization step and between 10 and 15 minutes of processing time.

While Selac® UV products are used for high quality requirements such as office furniture, kitchens and more because of the high mechanical and chemical properties which characterized them.

These lasts are subjected to a drastically reduced thermal stress considering XFC products and they require process times of about 5 minutes.

Currently there are few powder coatings UV e XFC lines for MDF, but an evolution in this sector is expected and Arsonsisi is leading a market analysis to define needs and find new solutions.

On 25th October, Arsonsisi participated at the day of industrial coatings organised by the editorial staff of La Rivista del Colore. The celebration was to mark the magazine’s 50th anniversary and took place in the stunning Sala del Cenacolo in Milan’s Leonardo da Vinci Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Tecnologia.

La Rivista del Colore celebrated its 50th birthday and took stock of the next 50 years of industrial coating together with industry experts in the relevant fields of activity: manufacturing, economics, design, education and surface treatment.

It was a day of celebration to reflect on the past, present and future of industrial coatings, and to become more aware of the concept of sustainability. Supported by first-hand experience, entrepreneurs and professionals shared their individual visions and encounters with those present.

What has changed over the years in the world of industrial coatings?

Arsonsisi tells the tale of its 100 years in the volume dedicated to the coating of metal and plastic in La Rivista del Colore’s “Storia della verniciatura industriale in Italia” book.

The answer can be found in the book “Storia della verniciatura industriale in Italia” (History of Industrial Coatings in Italy).

La Rivista del Colore traces its long journey in the pages of its magazines. They scan time and narrate the story of industrial coating from the 1960s to the present day, enriched by the tales of those companies that have been the protagonists of these years of change.

And among these entrepreneurial organisations, with the company celebrating 100 years of business last year, Arsonsisi’s contribution could not go amiss.

Presented for the first time during the event, the book is being published in two volumes dedicated to the metal and plastic, and wood industries. They have been written by Danilo O. Malavolti – President of Anver – and Gianni Giardina – former owner of Giardina Officine Aeromeccaniche – respectively.

In the afternoon, Arsonsisi’s representatives, alongside those of other manufacturing companies for installations, machinery, systems, and raw materials, powder coatings and liquid coatings, as well as spokespeople from the academic world, met at a round table to discuss the topics of sustainability, research, innovation and circular economy. Together, they examined the future of industrial coatings.

The day ended with a guided tour of the Toti submarine, recently restored thanks to the efforts of Danilo O. Malavolti, Founder of La Rivista del Colore, and the contribution of a number of companies in the industry.
